Rabten Choeling is a monastery and institute for the promotion of Buddhist philosophy, psychology and the spiritual traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. The institute was founded in 1977 by the Most Venerable Geshe Rabten Rinpoche at Mont Pèlerin, in the commune of Chardonne, canton Vaud, in the West of Switzerland.
Geshe Rabten Rinpoche was born in 1921 in the province of Dhargye, Eastern Tibet and from childhood on always showed great interest in spiritual life, which eventually led him to Central Tibet to join Sera Monastic University, where he mastered all topics of Buddhist studies.
Due to political upheaval, he departed to India with many of his disciples in 1959, where he acted as the philosophical assistant to His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama, who urged him to move to Switzerland with the aim of fulfilling the spiritual aspirations of the Tibetan refugees in Europe, as well as those of all Westerners sincerely interested in the heritage of Tibet.
Rabten Choeling was established in Mont Pèlerin in 1977 with the help of local supporters, such as Mme Anne Ansermet, the daughter of the illustrious Swiss conductor Ernest Ansermet, and provides to monastic as well as lay communities an opportunity to engage into a complete course of studies of Tibetan language and Buddhist philosophical topics.
The successful implementation of the study program in Mont Pèlerin served as a hub for the spreading of the peace-loving Buddhist values to the Western world and as the inspiration for the founding of other affiliated centers through the promotion of spiritual activities, such as the first public teachings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in the West, and diverse programs of teachings for adults and children, as well as interfaith dialogue initiatives.
Our institute will host an open house event for its 40th anniversary. The event will be presided over by the Ven. Rabten Tulku Rinpoche, who is the reincarnation of the founder of our institute, the Venerable Geshe Rabten.
The entire community of monks, nuns, students, friends and benefactors from more than 35 nations will gather to rejoice and celebrate these 40 years of virtuous activities.
With sincere gratitude for the blessed presence of these masters, and especially of our guest of honor, His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Choktrul Rinpoche, the reincarnation of H.H. the Dalai Lama’s tutor and master of all our masters, as well as our sincere gratitude for the kind support of the government and the people of Switzerland, and in particular, of those of our canton of Vaud and the commune of Chardonne, we would like to take this opportunity to invite you for this event on September 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
