Objectives - Studies

The Venerable Geshe Rabten Rinpoche founded the centre for three principal objectives:

  • To preserve and transmit the Tibetan-Buddhist tradition in its living and authentic form.
  • To help Tibetans in Switzerland and other European countries to maintain their spiritual and cultural identity, especially the younger generation.
  • To provide the facilities for all those who seriously seek to study the various aspects of Tibetan Buddhism like philosophy, psychology, meditation, art, and medicine.

Study program

In order to fulfil these demands, the centre offers various seminars and meditation courses for beginners as well as for advanced students. For full-time students a complete 7-year study program is offered, which covers the following subjects:

  • Pramana (logic)
  • Paramita (paths and stages)
  • Madhyamika (view of the middle way, philosophy)
  • Vinaya (monastic discipline)
  • Abhidharma (Phenomenology)

For a profound and precise understanding of the important treatises on the above mentioned topics a good knowledge of the Tibetan language is indespensable. For this reason there are regular courses on Tibetan language. All the completion of the studies, for those who seek it, is rewarded with a diploma as well.

International Buddhist Children's week

Every year, during summer holiday, Rabten Choeling organises a week for children. The children receive instructions on basic ethics of Ahimsa (non-violence), on Buddhist philosophy, Thanka painting, theatrical performance, and reading and writing of Tibetan. Excursions, pick-nicks, and other entertainments are also organised.
