Buddhist temple in Ashokapura, Sri Lanka

Lord Buddha in magnificent entourage

When travelling von Anuraddhapura to Mihintale, at about half the way, just after passing a small Ganesh-shrine on the left side of the road, leave the main road and turn left onto an earth-road, then follow it for another two kilometres to reach Ashokapura. This village has been founded in the 1980ies to harbour Singhalese refugees of the recent war. For many years, the village was without Buddhist temple, due to lack of resources.

Venerable Gonsar Rinpoche organised the construction of a small prayer hall and offered magnificent statues of Lord Buddha, the sixteen Arhats, Upasaka Dharmatala, the four great kings, and Pu-Tai Hua-Shang, with deep prayers to contribute by this effort to a lasting peace and happiness in the world and especially in this holy island. The people of the village, young and old alike, were overjoyed by this precious gift for them.

Rabten International Sangha led by Ven. Rabten Tulku Rinpoche, Ven. Gonsar Rinpoche, Ven. Geshe Buga, and Ven. Geshe Tsultrim along with Sri Lankan Sangha led by Ven. Maha Thero Walpola Kaliantissa have consecrated the tempel in January 2011

If you travel to the great old Buddhist sites of Annuradhapura and Mihintale, don't miss to pass by this little shrine full of blessing and life.
